Handmade Pottery in California by Karina Subijana
Altar Ceramics is the ceramic work of artist and maker Karina Subijana. Rooted in years of making on Maui and now produced in Nevada City, California, Altar is a collection of handmade pottery created for daily use—objects meant to bring a little more attention and intention to ordinary routines.
Each piece is made by hand from stoneware clay and kiln-fired, with the natural variation that comes from a human process rather than industrial production.

How Altar Began
Karina began making pottery during the seemingly endless days of early motherhood. Working with clay gave her a way to mark time, focus her attention, and make useful objects for her own home.
What began as a personal creative practice gradually became Altar Ceramics.
The work went on to find a home in independent boutiques and restaurants across the Hawaiian Islands and the mainland, growing from individual pieces made for daily life into an ongoing collection of functional ceramics.

Handmade in Nevada City, California
Today, Altar Ceramics is made in Karina’s studio in Nevada City, California.
The collection continues to center on functional handmade ceramics for the kitchen, table, and everyday rituals of eating and drinking. Each piece is made by hand and kiln-fired, with the natural variation that comes from a human process rather than industrial production.
For Karina, the value of handmade pottery is not simply that every object looks slightly different. It is that the object carries evidence of where it came from, who made it, and the choices involved in making it.
Objects for Everyday Ritual

Altar has always been about the relationship between useful objects and the way we move through ordinary life.
A cup held every morning, a pourer left beside the stove, or a vessel used at the table becomes part of a repeated ritual. The aim is to make those objects considered enough to notice, while remaining useful enough to live with every day.
That balance—function, simplicity, material, and presence—continues to guide the collection.
Wholesale Partnerships
Altar Ceramics has a long history of being carried by independent shops and has also appeared in restaurant settings. Wholesale is once again becoming an important focus for the studio, and Karina is currently welcoming new partners.
The full collection is available for wholesale ordering, with particular interest in working with independent retailers as well as cafés and thoughtfully designed interior spaces.
For larger or ongoing wholesale relationships, custom designs and logo work may also be available.
